Methionine

Sulfur-containing amino acid specified by the start codon in eukaryotes.

The R group for methionine has the backbone -C-C-S-C or -CH2-CH2-S-CH3. It is specified by the codon, AUG, and is abbreviated as either Met or M.

The amino acid that is specified by the start codon in prokaryotes is a derivative of methionine abbreviated fMet and which stands for N-formylmethionine.
