Trees

Trees are large and, especially, tall plants, as make up forests, though some trees live in comparative isolation.

Here we consider two basic themes regarding trees: What they are good for and how to identify them. The issue of how to identify organisms is a basic one in biology. While specific techniques differ between different sets of organisms, the general approach is to key in on relatively straightforward-to- identify aspects of organisms that also tend to be species specific. In many cases these differences are then organized into relatively easily used tools such as dichotomous keys. The science of organism identification as well as classification, description, and nomenclature together fall under the heading of taxonomy .

This video addresses the question of why trees are important, particularly from the perspective of urban environments.

Simply a very pretty look at trees and forests.

The very basics of tree identification.

Leaves of common trees of England, though with some overlap with those of the U.S. It's particularly a nice introduction to the diversity of tree leaves. Note that the London Plane is equivalent more or less to the American Sycamore while the Lime would be a Linden or Basswood to us; in addition, our local poplar are Eastern Cottonwoods

The above video is my own personal tour of the trees found on the The Ohio State University-Mansfield campus. Watch this video if you are unable to be present on campus to view these trees , or if you want to get a better sense of what is going on even if you do come onto campus.
