Genetics

Genetics is all sorts of things involving both heredity and the movement of information around cells, the latter being molecular genetics, though here the emphasis is on Mendelian genetics and pedigree analysis.

The goal of the associated laboratory exercise is to gain an appreciation for how to solve especially Mendelian genetics problems and pedigree analysis problems. By way of introduction to these various topics, see gene, allele, homologue, haploid, diploid, locus, true breeding, homozygote, heterozygote, autosome, sex chromosome, character, trait, dominant, recessive, complete dominance, incomplete dominance, incomplete dominance, homozygous recessive, sex-linked recessive, monohybrid cross, genotype, phenotype, and penetrance.

The above video walks through the basics of Mendelian genetics, including Punnett squares.

In the above video we return to probability theory and genetics.

In the above video we consider the Mendelian genetics of more than one locus.

The above video does a nice job of walking through a single pedigree, considering autosomal dominant versus autosomal recessive and sex-linked traits such as sex-linked recessive.

The above video also does a nice job of walking through a single pedigree, considering autosomal dominant versus autosomal recessive and sex-linked traits such as sex-linked recessive, but with an important twist.

The above video goes through the concepts of pedigree analysis in a useful way, though in my opinion the video is a bit too complex a presentation for a beginner.

The above video provides an introduction to genetics. As with many YouTube videos, it ends relatively abruptly.

The above video also represents an introduction to genetics, this time to molecular genetics.

The above video also provides an introduction to genetics, this one to genetic disorders and genetic diseases.
