Phylum Arthropoda

Exoskeleton-possessing animals with segmented appendages.

These appendages include such familiar things as the legs and antennae of insects. Included among arthropods are also spiders, scorpions, millipedes, centipedes, and a large number of marine organisms include shrimp, lobster, crabs, and numerous smaller creatures that make up a large fraction of what is known as zooplankton (and therefore which serve as the primary food source for baleen whales).

Collectively these members of phylum Arthropoda can be described, less formally, as arthropods and they are among the most successful of terrestrial animals.
