Measure of the proton concentration in a water solution; technically the opposite of the log10 of the proton concentration.

A pH unit represents a ten-fold change so that a pH of 6 has ten times as many hydronium ions as a pH of 7 whereas a pH of 8 has ten-fold fewer.

A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH of less than 7 is acidic. A pH of more than 7 is basic.
