Multicellular organisms include animals, plants, macrofungi (such as those that produce mushrooms, which are macrofungi fruiting bodies), and various forms of non-animal, non-plant, and non-fungi organisms such as multicellular algae as well as, to a certain degree, fungal molds and the protists known as cellular slime molds.

In terms of cellular differentiation, generally the most basic is a distinction between normal somatic tissue (soma) and an organism's germline.
