Embryonic development in which the fate of cells is a function of their position within the embryo rather than explicitly their direct lineage.

Indeterminate cleavage is seen in deuterostomes. Indeterminate cleavage also is what makes formation possible since the fate of any given cell is not determined (is "indetermined") over the course of cell division in the developing embryo.

Contrast with determinate cleavage.
