Supporting thread of the anther of a flower.

The filament can be viewed as that structure which thrusts the anther, and therefore pollen grains, better into the vicinity of whatever it is that is going to effect pollination.

Without the filament, that is, the anther would remain somewhat buried within the flower therefore potentially less capable of effectively shedding pollen.

The filament together with the anther make up the stamen.
