Epidemiology

Study of disease and health as involved in the discovery of causation and inferred from patterns of disease presence within populations.

The subjects that are considered by epidemiology are locations and incidences of morbidity and mortality, especially as these occur seemingly from similar causes. The epidemiology of infectious disease considers also the movement, prevalence, and evolution of microorganisms.

Epidemiology can be viewed, to a degree, as the biogeography of disease. As with the biogeography of microorganisms, microbial epidemiology, especially from an evolutionary perspective, is increasingly a nucleotide sequence-based endeavor.
