Algae-Caused Diseases

Amnesic shellfish poisoning, diarrheal shellfish poisoning, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning, paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Like bacterial intoxications, one does not treat the algae-associated diseases with algae-killing drugs because, in fact, these diseases too are intoxications.

You will of course note that all of these diseases are shellfish poisonings. What is going on is that the shellfish are filter feeders, particularly bivalves such as oysters and clams, thereby so acquiring the different algae, and their toxins, which cause these various diseases. People then occasionally ingest shellfish that happen to have become associated with these various disease-causing algae.
